Does Chromium Cause Headache?

Dr. McLeod

Hello, I took one 250 mcg chromium piclonate and got a headache within
a couple of hours – then felt general unwell after about 6 hours. I
would like to try this for depression, but the number 1 reason I don’t
take anti-depressants is because I don’t like the side effects. Will
the side effects with chromium subside?

ANSWER:  Headaches are very commom and there are many possible explanations for yours.  I’m not aware that chromium causes headaches.  The mild side effects of chromium — “caffeine-like” effects and vivid dreams -  do tend to disappear.  Please keep me posted

Dr McLeod,
I read that chromium(whatever the brand)could induce irregular
heartbeats. What is your pactical experience about that? First of all
is it possible?either maybe the dosages are into question or anything
else(chronic diseases,other drugs interaction)?Please,what is your
practical experience about this side effect?
Thank you very much.

A.C.

Dear A.C. No person has ever reported to me that chromium causes irregular heartbeats.  There are many possible causes, such as lack of exercise, excess caffeine, nicotine, prescription medications, and anxiety. You must check in with your primary physician and look for the cause. Please let me know.

Thank you for contacting me.

Chromium Plus Prozac: Serotonin Syndrome?

Dear Dr. McLeod,

I am taking 40mg of prozac a day. Can this safely be combined with
Chromium Pico without inducing seretonin syndrome. I worry about this?
Thanks I suffer from atypical depression and panic disorder.

Thank you.

KK

ANSWER:

Dear K

Some of my patients take chromium with Porzac. They report that chromium boosts the efficacy of Porzac.  Infrequently, however,  antidepressant medications can cause serotonin syndrome, and the addition of chromium may increase this possible adverse event.

Serotonin syndrome symptoms usually begins several hours after beginning to take a new medications, or increasing the dosage of a  medication dose of a drug you’re already taking. Signs and symptoms include: rapid heart rate, flushing, shivering, agitation, confusion, dilated pupils, sweating, diarrhea and  headache.’

If you believe you are developing serotonin syndrome, immediately contact your primary physician or go the the emergency room.

Please write to me with a follow-up report.

Does chromium induced jitters go away?

Dr. McLeod,
Your website is very helpful; thank you for the information.
I was reading on there about side effects such as jitters. I have never experienced this on a synthetic antidepressant, but am now after three days on Chromium.
Is this likely something that will fade if I continue the Chromium, or does it generally not go away?
JKP
ANSWER:
Dear JKP
Thank  you for contacting me. Unfortunately, I can’t answer your question –whether  the caffeine-like effect will disappear or not– as I don’t know the amount or preparation of chromium you are taking.  One suggestion: if you become uncomfortably jittery, you might reduce the dosage by half.  Do you consume caffeine or other stimulating substances?
Please let me know the results.
